Rock 'N' Scroll is ready to rock you!

Keynetik's Rock 'N' Scroll has now been released for download! Please respect Keynetik's wishes by signing up for and downloading the unsigned application here. It's in Forums>Nokia N95>DOWNLOAD - RockNScroll Beta 1.0 - Unsigned

EDIT: It seems this version doesn't play nicely with some phones. What I did to resolve the issue of the application not starting was to uninstall all of Samir and Tong Ren's applications and then reinstall Rock 'N' Scroll after a fresh reboot. Should work for you too, if not, drop a comment.

Enjoy!

Confirmation that 8GB+ will work in N Series and others

Christian Titze of the Symbianworld blog brings us news from John that confirms that N Series phones(and some others)will accept 16GB microSDHC cards.

I'm sure most of you already know that the theoretical limit for microSDHC is 32GB( Imagine that, 48 GIGABYTES on the N96) but there aren't any 32GB in free circulation at the moment so confirmation is still needed.

Here are some pictures from the post:

The Nokia E51 will support 16GB

The Nokia N95 will support 16GB

The Nokia E90 will support 16GB

The Samsung SGH-i780 will support 16GB

The Sony Ericsson K850i will support 16GB

This should mean that all other microSDHC supporting phones will accept the upcoming 16GB cards.

It's time to duel! Nokmote to take on Rock 'N' Scroll!

As spectators look on, two warriors prepare for the battle that awaits them. A battle of titanic proportions. A battle that will decide...the fate of the world! Keynetik's Rock 'N' Scroll challenges Samir's Nokmote!

I accept that maybe I got a little excited while writing up the opening paragraph of this entry but when something like this happens I just can't resist!

Word on the street is that Keynetik will be setting their application free on the 29th of February, meaning that everybody will be able to download an unsigned copy of Rock 'N' Scroll from their forum.

Rock 'N' Scroll is an application that functions in a similar manner to Nokmote. The user can navigate through their accelarator equipped S60 phone with just the flick of their wrist. However, as users of the first beta of Nokmote may tell you, there is still a lot of work to be done: the bad menu navigation, Being forced to hold the phone flat and of course unwanted actions from external movements (in a car for example). This is where Rock 'N' Scroll comes in, watch the video and you'll see what I mean.

Samir isn't one to relax while others steal his thunder....FlipSilent-->ShutUp, Landscape Pro-->RotateMe and Shakelock-->ShakeMe. He says that Nokmote beta 2 will be out around the last week of February...Sound familiar? Hints from Andrew Galpin (A moderator on Samir's forums) suggest that it may even be out before Samir's own estimation. If we take a quick look at Samir's to-do list for Nokmote, there are only 2 things that need to be done:

"Todo list:
- Setting to calibrate Nokmote, in order to use it in any postion, not only horizontally
- Add a setting to choose a hotkey (to allow N82's users to activate nokmote)"

However, hints from Andrew once again suggest that there's more to come than just what Samir says....Hmmm

Who will be the victor? Will Samir sizzle his opposition or maybe Keynetik will kick ass? Stay tuned to find out!

2 weeks without a laptop; N95 8GB saves the day

2 weeks ago my Laptop died. One of my first problems was how I would watch my favourite American and Japanese shows now that I didn't have access to a computer. Luckily, I have a N95 8GB which came to my rescue in my time of need.

How will I watch House!?

House was easy.
1) Open emTube and search for "house season 4"
2) Select the videos and watch.

This worked very well, everything was in sync and I didn't even have to wait for the videos to load before watching. Quality was fantastic aswell.

How will I watch Bleach!?
Bleach was relatively easy aswell.

1) Fire up the s60 browser
2) Go to google and search for "Bleach (insert episode number here)"
3) Find a site that streams the episode and enjoy.

This wasn't too bad, Subtitles were easily legible. Quality isn't on par with emtube though. The browser loaded up over 150MB in the temporary memory I think though.

How will I watch Lost!?

Once again, this was easy.

there are 3 ways I could have watched lost:

The first way is the same as with Bleach, search for a site that's streaming Lost in the browser and away you go.

The second way is to wait until Sunday evening and watch it on sky one.

This is how I did it though:

1) Download and install divx player for s60.
2) Find the pre-converted lost episode and download it
3) Enjoy

This way takes the longest , it took me about 10 minutes to download the 100mb file from rapidshare using Opera Mobile via wifi.

To conclude...

If you have a N95 8GB and your computer has kicked the bucket or is in for repair, or maybe if you just fancy some video watching in the comfort of your bed then don't despair for the saviour is here!

iPhone advert: "ALL the parts of the internet"?

Take a look at that video. Notice that it says that the iPhone has ALL the parts of the interntet (If you didn't notice, the "all" is even emphasised in the advert) Apple have made atleast 2 versions of this advert: an UK and an US version but in both that last line bugs me quite a bit especially since the iPhone and Macbook air adverts are shown basically every 5 minutes (what does that say about sales to you?) You never know what part of the internet you'll need, right? What about the Flash part of the internet? You know, that large, large part of the internet? Or maybe the Java part? OR even the downloading straight from your browser part? Obviuosly, Apple don't consider these things to be parts of the internet, considering the iPhone has all parts of the internet, correct?

Or maybe this is a hint that the iPhone will eventually get updates so that it actually does have all parts of the internet? Atleast Flash video support (like the N95 8GB =]).

Nokia Bluetooth headset BH-803 Review

The Nokia BH-803 was announced in June 2007 alongside the BH-602 and BH-604. A stylish design coupled with touch sensitive volume controls as well as DSP to help remove unwanted noises in conversations are things that will surely pique the interest of those in the market for a Bluetooth headset.

What comes in the box?

• Nokia BH-803 headset
• Nokia BH-803 headset loop
• Nokia micro-USB charger
• Nokia BH-803 clip
• Nokia BH-803 headset strap
• Manuals

Design:

It’s pretty obvious that Nokia were aiming for a simplistic design with the BH-803; the only colours seen throughout the whole device are a glossy black and the silver of the stainless steel. The touch sensitive volume control allows for the single multi-function key to take control of other functions while helping to keep to the theme of simplicity.

The glossy black finish is a major fingerprint magnet and this is worsened since you’ll be swiping the headset frequently with your fingers to control the volume.

There’s a sort of rubberised coating (like on the back of some N-Series devices, such as the N95) on the removable hook that helps to keep the BH-803 firmly in place on your ear. The hook is secured very firmly onto the device by a rotating rubber mound on the back.

Charging:

The first thing most people do with a new device is charge it, right? Well, the BH-803 charges via a micro-USB port at the top of the device. A full charge takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour but apparently a 15 minute charge will yield 5 hours of continuous talk time.

Pairing:

Pairing is very easy. If this is your first time pairing with the device just turn it on as normal by pressing the multi function key and then entering the pass code on your phone once the BH-803 has been found. To pair your phone with the BH-803 (if it’s already been paired with another device) just turn off the headset (by holding the multi function key until the indicator lights bleeps red) and then holding the multi function button again until the indicator light flashes blue. This means that it’s in paring mode and you can then proceed to pair it with your phone by entering the pass code which is 0000.

Call quality:

Calls are crystal clear, whether it’s you that initiated the call or if you’re receiving a call. I asked my friends if there were any problems with call quality and how clearly they could hear my voice and there were no complaints to be found.

Battery Life:
Supposedly a full one hour charge of the BH-803 will grant you a good eleven hours of talk time. Unfortunately I haven’t had an eleven hour chat with anyone lately so I can’t vouch for these claims…However, I can tell you that the battery life shouldn’t be too much of a worry as I went several days on a single charge whilst keeping the headset on throughout.

Ease of use:

Since there’s only one button on the BH-803, users will have to memorise the different presses that are needed to call upon functions such as Voice Dialling, rejecting a call, switching a call from headset to phone and others.

The touch sensitive panel eases the user experience; swipe your finger upwards to increase the volume or downwards to decrease the volume. Muting the volume is as simple as gently tapping the BH-803 twice in quick succession.
Comfort in-ear:

The earpiece is edged with a round piece of very soft and flexible rubber that fits into your ears perfectly. Unlike my plantronics headset there’s no discomfort when the device is worn for extended periods of time. The loop that’s provided in the box also greatly helps to keep the BH-803 from going anywhere.
Accessories:

There are two accessories included in the sales package; a strap:
and a clip:
They are both attached to the BH-803 by pushing the device into the clip/strap’s rubber grip. The strap can be worn around the neck and the clip can be…clipped to any part of your attire. No need to worry about losing your shiny Bluetooth headset though, the grip is VERY, VERY tight and it won’t be coming out unless you really want it to.

Other people’s opinions:

A major selling point of the BH-803 is its design, it’s meant to look different to the traditional Bluetooth headset. I asked some people what they thought about the BH-803 in its design.

My male friends ALL said it was eye-catching and looked nice but a bit on the feminine side. A lot of my female friends said that it looked like lipstick but that it still looks nice.

Conclusion:

In my opinion, the Nokia BH-803 Bluetooth headset is a well styled device that does very well at its intended use: making calls. It’s a device that will start conversations about how good it looks or how much it resembles a stick of lipstick. There are of course much cheaper alternatives available but if you’re looking for something that little bit more ‘special’, this is the headset for you.
