Nokia are at it again, N82's V30 unhackable

Earlier this year, Nokia successfully blocked FCA00000's python S60 v3 exploit... For a few hours. FCA00000 replied with his own version of HelloCarbide - the most powerful .Sis file that has ever existed in the history of Symbian. However, the release of the Nokia N82's V30 firmware marks the beginning of a new chapter in this cat and mouse game between Nokia and FCA00000. One man challenging a company of 117,212 employees.

HelloCarbide no longer works with the N82. There are some claims from some members of Symbian-Freak that following this update method will keep the hack working. I cannot confirm if it works as I don't have a N82 but it should be worth a try, right?

How to supposedly keep the hack on your V30 N82:
1) Format your V20 N82.
2) Hack your N82 using HelloCarbide and copy installserver.exe over to C:/Sys/Bin
3) Back up your phone using Nokia PC Suite.
4) Update your firmware
5) Restore using Nokia PC Suite.

If that doesn't work then you'll be stuck with a standard, locked down N82 until FCA00000 (hopefully) finds another exploit.

Enjoy.

How to: watch BBC iPlayer on your N95

The Nokia N96 will receive its very own iPlayer app next month. We don't yet know whether or not this application is exclusively for the N96. So, while you're waiting to find out, maybe you should check out some of the latest shows from the BBC... Using your current phone.

What you'll need:
A wifi enabled mobile phone.
A good wireless connection.

1) Open up your phone's browser and go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/index.html

2) Find the show you want to watch by navigating through the different categories. Click on the show.

3) When you're at the show's summary, click on where it says 'click to play'. RealPlayer will open and the show will start playing

The videos are encoded in 3gp at a 320x176 resolution and 192kbit/s bitrate. Although the quality isn't as good as the iPhone's version of iPlayer, it's still O.K. for a bit of mobile entertainment before you go to sleep. I hope the N96's iPlayer looks better than this though, otherwise that's one of the main selling points of the N96(atleast for me) gone.

Samir's HandWave brings touchless gesture control to S60

Samir is back with yet another one of his great applications. Posted on his new website 'AikonLab'(originally scheduled for release on the 9th...) is an impressive video demonstration of his newest app, 'handwave'.

HandWave
Uploaded by AikonLab

It seems that the application makes use of your device's forward-facing camera or maybe the ambient light sensor?

some of you may remember eyesight's own video demonstration of a very similar application from a few months ago. samir's handwave is almost the same but there is a big difference between the two: eyesight's gesture control could only be used in their own applications while Samir's handwave seems to be able to be used across the whole of the phone's menus and applications. Imagine hooking up your N95/N82 to your tv and navigating through a web page from the comfort of your seat... Handwave can hopefully make this a reality.

Handwave will be available on AikonLab from tomorrow(13th September).

Use the E71's browser on other Eseries!

-MiniMe- has been kind enough to extract the E71's default web browser and pack it into a lovely .SIS file. The E71's browser has a few differences when compared to the E90's. Let me show you one of the killer features of this new browser...

The E71 can browse in full screen mode. This means that the bars at the top and bottom of the browser window are removed, allowing you to see quite a bit more information on the screen than before.

Another thing you may notice is that the icons have been changed to those used in the E71.

You can download the browser HERE.
It's unsigned and you'll need a strong certificate or the ability to install unsigned files to get it running on your phone.

PLEASE NOTE:

This will REPLACE the default browser on your phone.
It will NOT appear in application manager (it won't uninstall)
I've tested this on the E90, it worked. On the N95 8GB it refused to open.
If it doesnt work on your phone, remove all installation files manually.
Full screen browsing on the E90 is beautiful!

Enjoy!

Nokia's N96 set to receive BBC iPlayer app

MSN's technology blog is reporting that the BBC have struck a deal with Nokia to bring the highly successful iPlayer service to the N96.

The application will come preloaded onto some N96s but will also be available for download on the BBC website. The service should be going live on October 1st which is also the official release date of the N96.

Hopefully the application will be available for other capable S60 devices, not just the N96. I'm also hoping that the quality is atleast equal to that of the iPhone's iPlayer streaming service.

o2 won't be selling the N96

What's this? Even the networks are passing on the N96 now? Maybe o2 don't consider DVB-H and a few more gigs of internal storage as good enough incentive to upgrade?

Well, according to Mobile Industry Review, o2 won't be carrying the N96 because they don't see the point in offering the device when their competitors (like 3) will almost certainly be offering the N96 for free and on cheaper tariffs than o2's.

With the rather poor reception that the N96 has gotten in quite a few online communities, it would be fair to assume that o2 won't be losing a substantial number of potential customers... Who knows?

New V30 firmware out for N95 8GB!

Biggzy today brings us the good news that the much rumoured V30 firmware has finally landed for the Nokia N95 8GB.

The update is not yet available on NSU, you can currently only get it by going to your local service centre OR by downloading the firmware HERE and then loading it onto your N95 with Phoenix.

No change logs are available at the moment so I have no clue as to what this update changes. As more people update, I'll be relaying their findings here.

V30 is apparently to be made widely available on NSU sometime in the next 2 weeks.
